			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The common question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and models available, it can be confusing for the buyer to pick between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up the same level of image quality.</p>
<p>Imagine a set of blinds in your household covering your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.</p>
<p>How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is absolutely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to create the projector image. An important point to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your wall at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of forming an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer&#8217;s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a single whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the top level of brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have included a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.</p>
<p>I find in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. At one glance, this must be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is in use. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.</p>
<p>When the content you wish to view needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all the colours are processed at once. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them not practical for most businesses and consumers.</p>
<p>Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract differing amounts when directed through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and some extra blue will come up below something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on a separate LCD panels.</p>
<p>The one actual plus (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to portability and must be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is vital to you, then the solution is no-brainer. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a Â£100 punt. Yachting was found to be popular with the rich and nobility, but after that period the fashion did not last.</p>
<p>The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held large naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).</p>
<p>Yacht racing was first seen in some ordered fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty&#8217;s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continuing location of British racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great stakes were held, and the society life was wonderful. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.</p>
<p>In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained power. Sailing was largely for leisure and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield&#8217;s Cleopatra&#8217;s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.</p>
<p><strong>Kinds of sailboats<br /></strong>The Early sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the second half of the 19th century. The style of bigger yachts was originally largely put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America&#8217;s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in today&#8217;s sense, with only a model being used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the study of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what it had already done for hulls.</p>
<p>Because nearly all sailboats were individually built, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the fastest growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the standard International America&#8217;s Cup Class adopted for yachts in the 1992 America&#8217;s Cup race.</p>
<p>So long as yachting was done primarily for the nobility and the rich, expense was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller yachts occurred in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of small yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.</p>
<p><strong>Kinds of power yachts<br /></strong>Following the decade 1840–50, at which point steam was set to replace sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in pleasure boats. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing became a favoured activity of the well off. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.</p>
<p>During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service during World War II.</p>
<p>As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger craft began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. In the decade following, large power-yacht manufacture flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.</p>
<p>The construction of large power boats declined after 1932, and the fashion thereafter was in preference of smaller, less costly yachts. After World War II, lots of small naval vessels were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a internationally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and maintaining their own small leisure craft. The number of yachts and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.</p>
